About Writing About Travel
Hi, I’m Sharyn, the face and creator behind Writing About Travel. I’m a travel writer and blogger and get asked all the time ‘how to be a travel writer?’ So, I’ve created this website and course to help others reach their dream of turning their love of travel and writing into a successful travel writing career.
My travel writing career began some 30 years ago when I fell into travel writing. And I’m glad I did. This is how it happened.
I was living in London on a working holiday and temping in an office to make money to fund my travels. One day I was reading an expat magazine and they had a small ad in the magazine asking for first-hand travel stories. I thought, I have just been to Turkey, I will write an article about my time there. So I did. I sent it to them and didn’t think about it again. One month or so later my article was published. Then a cheque for 20 pounds arrived in the mail. WOW! Was I thrilled or was I thrilled!
I was now hooked by the writing about travel bug. I wrote more articles with many being rejected. This travel writing thing was harder than I thought! I think I fluked it the first time. But I persevered. I can say, I have been a travel writer and content creator for some 30 years and been through the highs and lows this type of profession can throw at you. Plus, seen how the industry has changed and morphed into what it is today.
As I was being asked regularly ‘how do I make a living from travel writing’? I decided I would write a travel writing course to help others turn their passion for travel and writing into a career. I am pleased to say I have helped 100s of aspiring travel writers gain knowledge and skills and now, I see their travel writing published in different publications.
